What's Up at Civics Corner
Hello everyone,
And welcome back to a version of Civics Corner.
It’s been a long winter. Maybe longer than usual. But spring is here, and in Williamstown that means one thing: Town Meeting is coming up.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve run into a number of you out in the world (most recently at the Empty Bowls Fundraiser dinner), and one question has come up again and again: what’s next for Civics Corner?
The honest answer is that we’re still figuring that out. But here’s what we do know:
- We’ll be covering Town Meeting, with a focus on the warrants and what they actually mean in practice. Expect breakdowns of some of the bigger topics, including budgets, Community Preservation Committee funding, and yes, sludge (here is a copy of a draft of the sludge warrant, thanks Stephanie!)
- We’ll also be sharing a quick guide to how Town Meeting works, so you feel prepared to attend and participate.
- We’ll be sending reminders about Town Election, which is coming up in May.
- We’ll be meeting later this spring with a few supporters, including Bill Densmore, to think through what a more sustainable future for Civics Corner could look like.
- We’ll likely be looking for community members who want to contribute, whether that’s writing, research, or helping expand coverage.
We also want to take a moment to recognize the work that’s been happening behind the scenes. Over the past few months, elected officials and town staff have been building budgets, developing proposals, and shaping the warrants that will come before Town Meeting. That work sets the stage for what comes next.
Because this is the time of year when direct decision-making shifts from town officials to residents.
On Monday, April 13, the proposed town warrants will be signed by the Select Board. From there, we move into the full run-up to Town Meeting. Once the warrants are finalized, we’ll be digging into them and sharing clear, accessible breakdowns to help you understand what’s on the table before votes are cast.
We’ve also appreciated the steady stream of updates from Select Board member Steph Boyd, whose newsletters have helped keep the community informed over the winter months, as well as the efforts of Laura Christensen, the town’s new Communications Director, who has been working to expand updates and improve the Williamstown website.
